Songs of Old

This is the March of Trashy Hill. So many seagulls to kill. Hill is full of trash after our daily lunch bash. I'm not picking up. So many teachers to disrupt. We must neglect them all. Push them off and let them fall. These are the days. It's not just a phase. They come to eat the trash. I pop a cap in his ass. This is the March of Trashy Hill. So many seagulls to kill. Hill is full of trash after our daily lunch bash.

Yellow Smile 04:27
I've been going 95 on this freeway. Have I been motionless? You're the one who should be driving because we all know that I'm on drugs. Do you hear it when you dream? Do you see it when you realize that you are conscious? It's so loud. Why can't you hear it? It's so loud. Now I can't see you.
3.
No, don't be sorry. I'm just sitting around doing nothing. No, don't be angry. I'm just trying to help by doing nothing. I can't see you now. I'm leaving my hometown- the place where I was raised. I can't live here anymore. The people are so fake. I can't do it anymore. Call me crazy, call me dumb. But you don't know me- where are your opinions from? I can't take it anymore. I can't do it anymore.

The Clearing 04:03
I walked down to the river just to see you there. The sun came out, the wind picked up- the clearing was just ahead and I rest from my walk. I can see it- a snow-covered mountain range. It's there! It's there! I see it there! And you won't go there. Yeah, you're the devil. You don't know a thing. Come back, baby. I said, "come back here, baby".
5.
What he does not know is that she has you down. She feels badly about yelling, this being his birthday. "I know, I know," he said, unable to call him back. He's chosen to drive to the track and on this night, it is not desired. It holds two teenagers who were chased from a grocery store.
6.
As the birds fluttered by, without a sound, they picked up speed and flew down into the cave. Without a sound, they landed there alone. Follow that sound of the waves crashing down on the beach. One by one. The sand never settles. It shifts and turns around into the ground. As the birds fluttered by and the rain began to sing, I was thinking of you and the dirty little things you do. I miss you so. Now the birds are flying south. They're leaving me all alone. But I'm not too worried because I know you're coming home. I miss you so.
7.
So many words running through my mind. What goes on in other worlds? I'm on set. I'm on set now. I'm in my own world. I'm separate. I've never felt like this in my entire life- so lonely and so off, so empty and so detached. I've lived my life the best that I can. Yeah.
8.
Summer is just on the horizon, young seagull. Don't let your spirits fall down. I know it's been a while but I promise I'll be back again. I'll fly over the ocean just to see you again. I'll teach you how to fly. You just have to try. I'll teach you how to fly. We can make this work.
9.
With yarn on my wrist and rivers on my mind, I'll search for the things that are harder to find. Like Thoreau, I'll go where roads are narrow and I'll see the rivers- and I'll see the figures in the distance- and I'll see the blisters on your fingers. With each mile I make, the fog begins to settle overhead and the bitter cold is confirmed with leafless trees and the fact that I can see my breath. -and I'll see the rivers (of my mind) - and I'll see the figures in the distance- and I'll see the blisters on your fingers.
10.
You just had to ask. Didn't you? You devil. You.

about

"Songs of Old" is basically very similar to the album I did back in 2009 that was a companion to my first published book of lyrics (long out of print) called "Words", but it's a little more developed rather than the straight live takes. I considered suggestions by friends mostly and tried to play songs I don't usually play any more. These songs range in age from about 6 to 12 years old, which I find hard to believe but it's true. Most of these songs appear on older Water albums and I tried to re-contextualize them as much as possible without straying too far from the original vibe. Thanks for listening. -DE
